What inspired me to write about this? The other day, while we were out shopping. There was a stall selling 100% Pure Essential Oils from Australia. So I asked the salesperson more about how to use these oils. His oils range from $18 to $25 with a limited range of oils (Young Living Singapore has 33 Oil Singles and 40 Oil Blends. There are still some oils not sold in SG but only in US)

The sales person was very friendly and I believed was the owner of the business. He explained that the oils can be applied directly on the skin neat if it is for small area, like acne or just under the nose. He even demo for us on his face. But if we want to apply it over the body, then will require a carrier oil. Hmm.. so very similar to Young Living right? Then I asked if it can be ingested? And his answer was………NO! BINGO! Just as I have expected. ” We do not know what was used on the plants, like the pesticides etc, so it is best not to use internally”, he explained. Then I asked, in that case we should use Organic Essential Oils instead right? He said, if you want those that can be ingested, their prices would be 2-3 times more expensive.

So Ladies and Gentleman, please do keep the price factor in mind. What you pay is what you get. Since you do not know what pesticides has gone into the oil, then why would you want to even put them on your skin? What ever you apply on your skin goes into your body too right? First, you need to know that approximately 98 percent of all essential oils in the entire world are adulterated, contain harmful chemicals, and should never be ingested.  Although, Young Living oils are not certified organic, they do not use synthetic materials in their products or in their farms. Once at the workshop, the trainer told us that they even spread Thieves over their plants to protect them from pest. Amazing isn’t it?

Now, let’s take a look at some of the label of essential oils.

This is the one that I was talking about above. It is a 100% Pure Essential Oil. I have smudge out the coy name and brand.

Notice that it says for external use only and do not swallow.

Here’s another one my hubby bought from iherb, also a 100% Pure Essential Oil. He told me that they are not comfortable and do not want to be liable for people who ingest, so they do not put it on the label. Hmmm… then I guess Young Living is very sure that they are truly safe cos they do suggest people to ingest.

The words are so squeezed together, I can hardly make out what it says.

It says Diffuse Properly, May Irritate Skin, Not for Internal Use

And this one is from Young Living. The bottle came from the Everyday Oils, so it is a US version. The Singapore version would not have supplement facts as they do not recognize it as a food product in Singapore.

Bottle says 100% Pure Therapeutic Essential Oil Supplement. Peel open the label and you will see the Supplement Facts inside.

So are you convinced now? Try out Young Living Essential Oil and see if it can change your life.

The 3 Models of Using Therapeutic Grade Oils

When people hear of essential oils, their first mindset is aromatherapy, room fragrances. I must say sometimes I do feel quite upset when they compare therapeutic grade oils with them. Therapeutic oils are much better! And NOT YOU DO NOT REQUIRE A DIFFUSER!! Therapeutic oils from young living are safe to put on your skin or even ingested into your body. Do you know that they are actually considered as supplement in the US! Just check the labels on the bottles of oil you buy from the stores outside, most of them would for external use only, or do not apply on skin etc and definitely not to be taken!! Below are the 3 models that Young Living adopts, take some time to read.

1) English Model: small amount of eo in a large amount of vegetable oil to massage the body.

2) French Model: prescribes neat (undiluted) topical application and/or ingestion of the pure essential oils.

3) German Model: focuses on inhalation of essential oils. Inhalation exert strong effects on the brain and limbic system.

So which model to use!??????
Inhalation of essential oils might be preferred over topical application, if the goal is to increase growth hormone secretion, promote weight loss, or balance mood and emotions. Sandalwood, peppermint, vetiver, lavender, and white fir oils are effective for inhalation. In other cases, however, topical applications of essential oils would produce better results, particularly in the case of back or muscle injuries or defects. Topically applied, marjoram is excellent for muscles, lemongrass for ligaments and wintergreen for bones. In some cases all three methods are interchangeable and may produce similar benefits.

Some essential oils are high in sesquiterpenes, such as myrrh, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, and melissa can dramatically increase oxygenation and activity in the brain, which may directly improve the functions of many systems of the body.

The ability of essential oils to act on both the mind and the body is what makes them truly unique among natural therapeutic substances.

Caution!

Some people assume that because an essential oil is “100% pure”, it will not burn their skin. This is not true. Some pure essential oils may cause skin irritation if applied undiluted.  If you apply sraight oregano oil to the skin of some poeple, it may cause severe redding. Citrus and spice oils like orange and cinnamon may also produce rashes.

My Collection of Essential Oils (Part 2) Peppermint

My favourite oil among all my collection that I am writing a post just for it. Saved me twice for diarrea, stomach discomfort, headaches, nausea. It is a must have in my bag.

I have been having frequent migraine (pain on one side of my head), and then I get really gassy and sometimes feels nausea when it gets really serious. I hate to rely on panadol unless I really have to take it because I need to go to work. Otherwise I would always try to sleep it off without medication. But now with the peppermint oil, I can apply it when I feel the headache coming, without having to worry about abusing medication or having overdose or reliance on medication.

One day I was having diarrea, and I went to the toilet 3-4 times already. Then I remembered that I can use peppermint for stomach discomfort so why not try it. I rubbed 1-2 drops on my palm and press it on my tummy. I didnt went back to the toilet after that. Pretty amazing. Just 2 days ago, doc prescribe antibiotic that gave me diarrea, I was outside travelling on the train and felt really horrible. I had to exit the station to find a toilet!! I stayed in the toilet for a while as I worried that I need to run to the toilet again which means I would have to tap out of the station again. I applied peppermint (which I always carry with me) and I felt much better and was able to proceed to my destination.

I remember my boy was down with flu and I brought him to the doctor. Doctor says he was having a low grade fever and asked me to feed him paracetamol. I didn’t want to as it was only low grade fever and I didn’t want to overdose him with medication. But as he was napping his temperature rose. So I tried rubbing peppermint on his back and when he woke up, he perspired and fever was gone. I was also running a little fever as I was down with cough and I applied peppermint too and it does help and fever went away.

Just today, it could be because I didnt had a proper breakfast and meal, my stomach was very bloated and uncomfortable, that I felt really uncomfortable to even sit down. I was working and couldn’t lie down to rest, I thought why not try some peppermint. I rubbed it 2 times (interval of 30 mins) and that feeling went away. I felt normal again and I could still have my dinner.

Sometimes, after a heavy meal, I also apply peppermint to help with my indigestion. Eaten sometime stinky and needed a fresh breathe, rub some peppermint on your tongue.

Now I can’t leave my house without a bottle of peppermint in my bag.

My Collection of Essential Oils (Part 1 – RC, Myrtle, Thieves)

In this post, I am going to talk about the uses and function of these essentials from my collection and why I choose them.

As mentioned, I have a 34 month boy at home who is frequently down with running nose and cough with phlegm almost every month. So these are the oils that I have chose for him. I will talk about what I know about them and what information I found when i google-ed them.

CAUTION: Whatever discussed here are solely meant for Young Living’s Therapeutic Oils. The application methods do not apply for other oils that are in the market as we do not know what is their ingredients.

1) RC (which represents Respiratory Congestion)

R.C.™ contains powerful therapeutic-grade essential oils that are invigorating when applied, especially to the chest and throat area. R.C. is a wonderful blend to diffuse during winter.

What I know: RC is used to open up the airway. So when you are having blocked nose or running nose, RC is the blend for you. You will find that it’s function is similar to vick (however vick is petroleum based, any oil-based medication shouldn’t be used under or inside the nose, inside the mouth or swallowed. Any oil-based product can get into the lungs if used improperly)

How I use it: For children, we will need to dilute them. As for my 34 month boy, the dilution ratio is 1:1 with V6 veg oil and then apply it to his chest and back. And I will ask him to inhale the oil that is left on my hand.

2) Myrtle

myrtle

What I know: In the case of cough, we usually would use eucalytpus. However, eucalyptus is not suitable for children below 3 years old due to its strong menthol ingredient. Hence, myrtle is a replacement for younger children with cough to help them dissolves phlegm. I later on found out that is also very good for ladies as it helps to prevent thyroid problems.

How I use it: I use myrtle together with RC using the layering method. To layer means to apply one oil, wait 1-2 minutes for the oil to absorb and then apply the second. With 2 benefits of both oils, they help to battle the cough, the runny nose and the phlegm.

What I Google-ed and found useful:

(Source: http://www.experience-essential-oils.com/myrtle-oil.html)

What are the Documented Uses and Benefits of Myrtle? Bronchitis, coughs, flu, hypothyroidism, insomnia, infection (throat, lung, sinus, respiratory, ureter), prostate conditions, hormone balancing, skin conditions (acne, blemishes, bruises, oily skin, psoriasis,) cancer (prostate and breast) and muscle spasms.

What is the Aromatic Affect on the Mind? It is uplifting and euphoric. Has a sweet, slightly camphorous aroma with a light floral overtone.

What is the Spiritual Influence? Myrtle oil helps balance the male and female energies of the body by releasing anger and inner conflict. It will help those who feel suppressed or confused by life as well.

Balancing the male and female energies is important to becoming whole in our spiritual evolution. Often times we are taught to be one sided and avoid masculine or feminine traits. This creates unbalance in our body and is often manifested in our lungs/heart (respiratory conditions) or the endocrine system (thyroid, hormonal imbalance).

3) Thieves

What I know: Thieves is comes from the story of 4 thieves who stole dead bodies for profit but didn’t get infected. When questioned, they revealed that they rubbed a combination of oils on them to protect them. This is how thieves came about. Thieves is the only essential oil that is able to kill air-borne bacteria when diffused.

How I use it: A drop on the sole for my boy every morning before he goes to child care and at night before bedtime. Keeps him protected from germs, bacteria and virus in school. Lowers his risk of getting infected by other children and also the risk of HFMD. During this period, everyone in the family was down with cough. I diffuse Thieves every night as we all sleep in an air-conditioned room and I didn’t want my virus or my hubby’s virus to spread to my boy.

Caution: Thieves is a hot oil, always dilute when applying on the body. I tried to applied on my hubby’s sore throat and he said it was very hot. My boy accidentally took the cap of the bottle to sniff and rubbed some oil on his nose and upper lips then he was crying in pain. Luckily I had a bottle of v6 to help him dilute the pain.
